On Tuesday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi held a meeting with Karnataka party president Mallikarjun Kharge to discuss government formation in the southern state. This comes in the midst of ongoing talks for the Karnataka chief minister’s post.
Rahul Gandhi, accompanied by Congress General Secretary Randeep Surjewala and AICC General Secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal, visited the residence of Karnataka Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge and had a private meeting that lasted for an hour and a half.
Kharge held talks with Karnataka Congress leaders and 3 observers he appointed to supervise the Congress Legislature Party gathering in Bengaluru on Sunday.
The observers gathered the opinions of all newly-elected MLAs in Karnataka and conducted a secret ballot on their choice for chief minister. They presented their report to Kharge on Monday night.
Two of the top contenders for the role of Karnataka’s Chief Minister are Siddaramaiah and state Congress President D K Shivakumar. Both politicians are actively campaigning for the position.
Shivakumar arrived in Delhi on Tuesday afternoon, after former chief minister Siddaramaiah had already been in the national capital. He declined to answer media queries and swiftly exited the airport, hands folded in greeting.
On Monday evening, Shivakumar cancelled his scheduled visit to the national capital due to health issues, raising questions about the unity of his party.
Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar are set to meet with the Congress party chief, Mallikarjun Kharge, and other senior party members to discuss the formation of a government in Karnataka. Additionally, the pair will meet with former Congress Party president Rahul Gandhi.
Congress MLAs, who were recently elected to the legislature, have come to a resolution that allows the party leader, Mallikarjun Kharge, to appoint a leader of the Congress Legislature party. This individual will then become the chief minister of the state.
