On Wednesday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanded an apology from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for his comments about India’s democracy during a recent visit to Germany. The party said that the Indian people had brought the Congress party to “political perish” due to Gandhi’s behavior abroad. The BJP insisted that while the country’s democracy was not in danger, Gandhi’s comments have painted a negative picture of India in the eyes of the international community.
Smriti Irani urged Gandhi to apologize to Parliament for his remarks and stated that his grudge with PM Modi has now become a grudge with India.
Gandhi asserted that Indian democracy is in peril, and a concerted effort is being made to undermine its foundations.
“At the feet of India’s colonial past, Gandhi lamented the lack of foreign intervention in India’s democracy. This is to bring to a halt India’s resilient growth story under the leadership of PM Modi,” she said.
Gandhi claimed that he had no knowledge of conversations in Indian universities, which the minister interpreted as a sign of democracy’s demise. She also alleged that Gandhi had visited a university in Delhi in 2016 and backed the chant of ‘Bharat tere tukde honge’.
Gandhi said democracy is being “blown to smithereens” in India, which Irani charged. However, during his ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’, Gandhi said “all is well in India”.
“Which was a lie, Mr Gandhi? Your statement in India or your statement in England?” she asked.
Irani accused Rahul Gandhi of attacking the greatness of India’s Parliament, as well as the authority of its Supreme Court and Election Commission, during his UK visit.
The Union minister said that the Congress party had been brought to political perish by the people of India due to Gandhi’s behaviour abroad. She added that every Indian citizen demands an apology from Gandhi as Parliament is the Constitutional reflection of the people’s will.
“It is shameful that Rahul Gandhi, instead of coming to Parliament and apologizing for his undemocratic rant against India, today seeks to be absent from Parliament,” she affirmed.
She also said, “When the Gandhi family directs Congressmen and women to tear papers and throw them at the Speaker’s chair in Lok Sabha, is that democracy”.
